Concentration of Heavy Metals in Burley, Virginia and Oriental Tobacco Leaves in the Thessaly Region of Central Greece

چکیده
It has been pointed out that tobacco accumulates cadmium as well as other potentially toxic heavy metals. A three year study was carried out to provide information on the concentration of heavy metals in air-cured (Burley), flue-cured (Virginia) and sun-cured (Oriental-filling) tobacco produced in the Thessaly region of central Greece. During the years 1998, 1999 and 2000, 474 composite surface (0-30 cm depth) soil samples and 474 leaf samples of cured tobacco at 1, 2 and 3 priming were collected throughout the regions and concentration of Zn, Cu, Mn, Cd and Pb was determined. Correlation analysis was used to determine the relationships between soil physical and chemical properties and the concentration of heavy metals in leaf and soil samples. Metal concentrations (mg kg D. M.) in tobacco leaves were found to be as follows: Burley: Zn (6.8-165.5), Cu (1.1-34.5), Mn (16.7-662.5), Cd (0.04-3.6), Pb (0.04-9.1); Virginia: Zn (4.8-108.8), Cu (1.1-68.8), Mn (4.1-897.5), Cd (0.01-3.4), Pb (0.01-10.2); Oriental: Zn (2.1-729.4), Cu (0.2-370.8), Mn (6.3-1424), Cd (0.01-2.6), Pb (0.01-14.4). Statistically significant negative correlations were recorded between heavy metal concentrations in Virginia and Oriental tobacco leaves and soil pH, in all primings.

The purpose of this work was to provide information on heavy metals concentration in soils and in irrigation water in Thessaly, Central Greece, where tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) is cultivated. Tobacco tends to accumulate high levels of heavy metals, especially Cadmium. During the years 1998, 1999 and 2000, 795 surface soil samples (0-30 cm depth) and 200 water samples were collected from Kardit...
متن کاملLevels of nicotine in Ethiopian tobacco leaves
Tobacco is a valuable cash crop. It is the most widely grown non-food crop in the world. Tobacco use is widespread due to its addictive nature of its main constituent nicotine. Therefore, the knowledge of nicotine level in tobacco is important to tobacco industry and in the area of toxicology to control its harmful effect on health. There is no report in the literature on nicotine level of Ethi...

Background and Objective: Tobacco is a rich source of heavy metals that during its growth the amount of these elements increases. The use of tobacco leaves is one of the major routes of exposure to heavy metals. The aim of this study was to determine the amount of lead, chromium, and cadmium in the samples of aromatic tobacco in the Shiraz market. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectio...

In present study IRAP and REMAP markers were used to assess genetic diversity levels in 45 genotypes of different types of tobacco germplasm, including burley, flue-cured and oriental tobacco that out of 20 composition primers, 5 IRAP primersand 9 REMAP primers produced scorable and polymorphic banding patterns. Totally from 188 amplified loci, 153 loci were polymorph. RTR-10 and RTR-1 with 22 ...
متن کاملLevels of heavy metals in the raw and processed Ethiopian tobacco leaves
Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) is a commercial plant. Tobacco leaves naturally accumulate and concentrate relatively high levels of heavy metals and particular cadmium in leaves. Tobacco is one of the basic agricultural products, in Ethiopia, with social and economic importance. However, there is no report in the literature on the determination of levels of heavy metals in Ethiopian tobacco lea...
